Elegant and enduring, hardwood floors make a beautiful choice for almost any room in your home. Freeds Fine Furnishing's flooring department carries a wide selection of hardwood flooring. Our professional sales staff can help you determine the right style for you.  Whether you prefer traditional oak, exotic hardwoods or the rugged elegance of a hand scraped floor; Freeds has it all. When it comes to hardwood flooring, there are two basic choices-solid or engineered.

Solid wood is milled from a single piece of hardwood (3/4" or less) . Because of its thickness, a solid hardwood floor can be sanded and refinished over several generations of use. Solid wood flooring expands and contracts with changes in your home's relative humidity. Normally, installers compensate for this movement by leaving an expansion gap between the floor and the wall. Base molding or quarter round is traditionally used to hide the extra space.   Traditional solid hardwood flooring is not well suited for installation in basements or on concrete slabs because of the possibility of moisture issues. It is recommended to be installed over plywood, OSB or other wood flooring.

Engineered woods are produced with multiple layers of hardwood. Each layer is stacked in a cross-grain configuration and bonded together under heat and pressure. As a result, engineered wood flooring is less likely to be affected by changes in humidity and can be installed at all levels of the home.  Engineered wood can be direct-glued down over concrete slab or stapled down over a wooden subfloor.  Some types of engineered wood have a tongue & groove locking method for fast and easy floating installation.
